chapped-lipsCracked swollen or peeling lips are all incredibly painful and depressing conditions. At one time harvesters and fishermen knew these to be an occupational hazard but such soreness can be the result of many things. Weather can take its toll on the lips but so can running a temperature and illness.

Sunburn, sunbathing, swimming in the sea and allergic reaction to food and plants all create the condition which may cause the lips to become swollen and shiny after which they will split or peel.

Always keep the lips well protected. When you are unwell deep them lubricated with white petroleum jelly (vaseline) at all times and especially at night. In earlier times butter or goose grease was used and was considered particularly effective if mixed with chickweed or marsh mallow.
